Are You FREE? 2012

Are You FREE? internatiomal musicfestival 2012

19-20. october 2012

NFG klub, Korzo B. Bartóka 788/1, Dunajská Streda

The music festival „Are you Free?” is a festival of particular genres. We are waiting for all the music lovers who were able to keep a kind of openness in their way of thinking and music taste, without taking the age into consideration. We would like to give publicity to improvisatory music genres, which help us to get rid of our ordinary music concepts and everyday ways of thinking. Thanks to improvisations you will be witnesses to creation of unique works of art. Moreover, besides the representatives of the best European jazz scene and other genres as well we could see and listen to world famous stars. The NA’CONXYPAN PT’s and Jazz Klub DS´s initiative is a unique struggle in the Slovak jazz scene, which hopefully gives a new impulse to Slovak jazz musicians, since avant-garde tendencies, like the free genre, are unfortunately pushed into the background. It must be borne in the mind that this will not have a positive effect only within this tendency, but the representatives of classical jazz scene can also learn a lot from it. The „Are you FREE?” project ensures more effective method of this studying, since those who are interested in can not only listen to the music but they can directly learn it from a famous contemporary musician within a workshop.

Mezei Szilárd Trió (Srb)
19.10.2012 20:00
The trio was founded in y. 2000. Members: Szilárd Mezei (viola), Ervin Malina (doublebass), István Csík (drums). They play contemporary improvised music, mostly performing own compositions. As a composer, Mezei is interested in exploring the relationship between improvisation and composition (similarly to Witold Lutoslawski's aleatoric and Anthony Braxton's creative music methods), incorporating elements of jazz and authentic folk music as well. As a young musician he followed the path of B.Bartók and Gy.Szabados. Mezei is also very actively involved in composing scenic music and plays authentic Hungarian folk music on genuine folk instruments (koboz and oud).

The Geordie Approach (Nor/UK)
19.10.2012 21:00
THE GEORDIE APPROACH is a collaboration between the two Norwegian musicians
Petter Frost Fadnes and Ståle Birkeland, teamed up with guitarist Chris Sharkey, a
Geordie born and bred.
This uncompromising and experimental trio pursues music within loose improvisational structures,
adding a surprisingly broad range of flavours to their overall sound world. Their creative ideas
grow within a large and open musical ‘space’, and the trio has a reputation for adapting and utilizing
their performance space in an extremely effective and engaging manner. In their untiring quest for
brilliant and unusual musical destinations - Birkeland, Frost Fadnes and Sharkey produce musical
elements that often are contradictory in shape, moving between melody and noise, ambient
grooves and abstract textures.

BERGLJOT (the former Vojtech Prochazka Trio) began in 2008 as a jazz piano trio consisting of three students at NMH, Oslo and inspired by Paul Bley, Herbie Nichols and Ornette Coleman. The core repertoire of originals and original arrangements of not-so-known songs was recorded on the band's first CD "Amoeba's Dance" - and received very good reviews. Instead of repeating the successful piano trio formula the band began searching for a more personal sound. Taking chances with more open improvisation, instrument preparations, no set-lists, and by 2010 the trio began playing completely improvised concerts of startling clarity, with a fresh and unique sound of prepared instruments, unorthodox playing techniques and found sounds. A recording from of one such concert from May 2011 will make for the band's next CD "red red white red" to be released in early 2012. After a period of working with shorter, very varied improvised fragments of music has the band has started experimenting with a stricter, minimalist approach of very slow development with special focus on richness of sound. The band has received great reviews and has played on festivals such as Jazz Fest Brno, Natt Jazz Bergen and Jazzinec Trutnov as well as venues in France, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Norway and Czech Republic.

The THING (Swe/Nor)
20.10.2012 21:30

The Thing is a Norwegian/Swedish jazz band, consisting of Mats Gustafsson (saxophones), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (double bass), and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums).
The trio was established in February 2000 during a series of concerts in Stockholm and a recording of Don Cherry-compositions that was released in Sweden by the label Crazy Wisdom/Universal. Melding German, British and American traditions of free music, their repertoire has later been collected from various sources such as James Blood Ulmer, Frank Lowe, PJ Harvey, White Stripes and Joe McPhee. McPhee was also a participating musician on the "She Knows..." album (2001). Other guests who have joined the Thing for recording and performances include Ken Vandermark, Otomo Yoshihide, Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke and Jeb Bishop.
"Garage" was released on the Smalltown Superjazzz label in 2004. An EP of live material performed with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience was released in 2005, as well as a live album. 2006 saw the release of Action Jazz also on Smalltown Superjazz. The group covers material from Ornette Coleman, Lightning Bolt, Yosuke Yamashita and others in addition to original material. The group are the only free jazz ensemble working today who wear stage uniforms. They perform clad in t-shirts from Ruby's Barbecue Restaurant in Austin, Texas.
In June 2012, they released an album that they collaborated on, as Swedish-British singer Neneh Cherry's accompaniment, for their album The Cherry Thing. This album is Neneh Cherry's first foray into music again after a 16 year hiatus from the industry.
